World Cup 2026 Best Third-Placed Teams Explained

At the 2026 World Cup, the eight best third-placed teams from the 12 groups join the 24 group winners and runners-up in the Round of 32 — so only four of the twelve third-placed sides go out. They are ranked by points, goal difference then goals scored, and a fixed FIFA table decides which third plays which group winner.

The third-place race so far (9 of 12 groups decided)

9 of the 12 groups have finished. The table below ranks the current third-placed team in every group that has started — the top eight are on course to reach the Round of 32, but positions stay provisional until the final group games are played.

Third-placed teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored (further FIFA tiebreakers — disciplinary record, then drawing of lots — decide any remaining ties). Rankings update as each group finishes.

How the best third-placed teams are decided

All 12 third-placed teams are pooled into a single table and ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored (disciplinary record and a drawing of lots break any remaining ties). The top eight reach the Round of 32; the bottom four go out.

Which third plays which group winner is the bracket's trickiest rule. Each slot in the table below only takes a third from a fixed pool of groups, so teams avoid a group-stage rematch — and with 495 possible combinations of qualifying groups, FIFA assigns them from a predetermined lookup table. That is why each winner's opponent stays a projection until all 12 groups finish.

Best third-placed teams — FAQ

How many third-placed teams qualify for the 2026 World Cup knockouts?

Eight of the twelve third-placed teams qualify for the Round of 32. The 24 group winners and runners-up go through automatically; the eight best third-placed sides fill the remaining knockout places, so only four third-placed teams are eliminated.

How are the best third-placed teams ranked?

All twelve third-placed teams are compared on the same FIFA criteria, in order: points, then goal difference, then goals scored. If teams are still level, the disciplinary (fair-play) record is used, and finally a drawing of lots. The top eight on that ranking advance.

Why is third-place qualification so complicated?

There are 495 different combinations of which eight groups could supply the qualifying thirds (12 groups choose 8). Each Round of 32 slot can only take a third from a fixed set of groups, partly so teams do not meet a group opponent again. FIFA uses a predetermined lookup table to map every combination of qualifying groups onto the bracket positions, which is why the third-placed opponents only lock in once all the groups are finished.

Which Round of 32 matches feature a third-placed team?

Eight Round of 32 ties pit a group winner against a best third-placed team: Match 74 in Boston, Match 77 in New York / New Jersey, Match 79 in Mexico City, Match 80 in Atlanta, Match 81 in SF Bay Area, Match 82 in Seattle, Match 85 in Vancouver or Match 87 in Kansas City.

Has the best-thirds format been used before?

Yes — UEFA used four best third-placed teams out of six groups at Euro 2016, 2020 and 2024. The 2026 World Cup scales the same idea up to eight of twelve, the first time it has been used at a World Cup since the 24-team format of 1986–1994.
